In 1999, the Mt. S.A.C. course was renovated.  The Valley Loop was shortened a bit, and the sand on Poop-Out Hill was hardened.  Research concluded that the renovated Mt. S.A.C. course was as a result, 18 seconds faster per runner.  Thus, in comparing times pre-1999(not bolded) to post-1999, 1:30 has to be subtracted to the team times of 1987-1998.

*It was later concluded that the team time of 1:23:54, indeed qualified Salesian for an at-large State berth.

How is cross country scored?

A cross country meet is scored by adding the places of a team’s top 5 finishers. Like in golf, the lowest score wins. In an event of a tie, the 6th place runner breaks the tie. Although “non-scorers” do not usually figure into the scoring directly, they can become a factor in the scoring if they finish before other teams’ top 5 runners. Consequently, they become “pushers”, adding points to other teams’ point total, making cross country a unique sport in that the individual and the team are of equal importance.

What has been Salesian High School’s Cross Country history been like?

Salesian cross country is a hallmark name in the small school divisions of the Southern Section. Beginning in the 60’s with the Keegan Boys coached by revered Brother Tom Keegan to the present, Salesian cross country is no stranger to league titles and post season success.
